Colour Mill

Color activator - Colour Mill Booster

Color activator to intensify Colour Mill food colorings, 20 ml format

The Colour Mill Booster Activator is a transparent additive that greatly increases the intensity of other Colour Mill food colorings. Added at a ratio of 1 drop for every 3 to 4 drops of food coloring, it achieves bright, saturated shades more quickly without altering the preparation's texture.

Like the rest of the Colour Mill range, the Booster is designed for fat-based ingredients (white chocolate, ganache, buttercream, fondant). The 20 ml soft squeeze dropper bottle is suitable for occasional use and testing before larger-scale production.

When to use the Booster

5 use cases where the activator saves time and food coloring:

  • Intensification of bright shades (Hot Pink, Fuchsia, Red, Cobalt)
  • Saturation of dark colors (Black, Burgundy, Forest)
  • Fat-based preparations requiring a vibrant color
  • High color saturation for event pastries
  • Food coloring savings for large boutique productions

Features

  • Brand: Colour Mill (Australia)
  • Type: Color activator (transparent, with no color of its own)
  • Packaging: 20 ml soft squeeze dropper bottle
  • Function: Intensifies other Colour Mill food colorings
  • Typical dosage: 1 drop of Booster for every 3 to 4 drops of food coloring
  • Compatible bases: Melted chocolate, ganache, buttercream, icing, fondant
  • Heat resistance: Stable up to 180°C

Instructions for use

  1. Preparing the base: bring the fat-based mixture (white chocolate, ganache, buttercream) to 25–30°C. Above 35°C, some pigments may lose intensity.
  2. Initial dosage: shake the bottle for 10 seconds. Add 2 to 4 drops per 250 g of mixture for pastel shades, 6 to 10 drops for vibrant shades, and 15 to 25 drops for dark shades.
  3. Mixing: whisk with a stand mixer or silicone spatula for 30 to 60 seconds to distribute the colour evenly.
  4. Resting and stabilisation: leave to rest for 30 minutes at room temperature under cling film pressed directly against the surface. The shade develops and reaches its full appearance during resting.
  5. Optional adjustment: if the shade is too pale, add 1 to 3 additional drops and remix. Proceed in increments to avoid oversaturation.

Ingredients and compliance

Composition: food-grade vegetable oil base and food colouring pigments compliant with European regulations (EU 1333/2008).

Allergens: no major allergens declared. Gluten-free, lactose-free, egg-free, peanut-free, and soy-free. Suitable for vegetarian and vegan diets.

Storage

  • Keep the bottle closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Ideal storage temperature: between 15 and 22°C.
  • Slight pigment/oil separation is normal after prolonged storage: shake for 10 seconds before use.
  • Once opened, use within 12 months to preserve maximum pigment intensity.

Patissland Tip – Booster

Booster is not a colouring agent: it is a transparent activator that multiplies the intensity of other Colour Mill colouring agents. Add 1 drop of Booster for every 3–4 drops of colouring agent to achieve vibrant shades more quickly. Particularly effective on reds, fuchsia, hot pink, and black, which normally require a lot of product. Real savings for production bakeries.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 20 ml size sufficient for regular use?

Expect approximately 30 to 50 colored creations from a 20 ml bottle, depending on the dosage. For regular professional use, the 100 ml size (see above) costs approximately 35% less per milliliter.

How many drops for 250 g of buttercream?

For pastel shades: 2 to 4 drops. For vibrant shades: 5 to 10 drops. For dark shades: 12 to 20 drops. Always start with less and gradually adjust; it is easier to intensify a color than to lighten it.

Is Colour Mill colorant heat-resistant?

Yes, Colour Mill is one of the few oil-soluble colorants that retains its intensity after baking at temperatures up to 180°C. This property distinguishes it from classic liquid colorants, which become lighter in the oven.

Can Colour Mill be used on water-based mixtures (royal icing, syrup)?

No, Colour Mill oil-soluble colorant is designed for fatty bases: melted chocolate, ganache, buttercream, and fondant. For water-based mixtures, use the water-soluble Colour Mill range.

Does the bottle have an integrated dropper?

Yes, the 20 ml Colour Mill bottle has a dropper opening integrated into the soft cap. A simple squeeze dispenses one precise drop.
