Silver Cake Support "Drum", 1.2 cm thickness, textured finish

Give a prestigious and secure base to your finest creations with the Silver Cake Support "Drum". Unlike standard thin supports, the "Drum" has a 12 mm thickness that provides absolute rigidity. It is the ideal platform to support the weight of tiered cakes, dense wedding cakes, or fondant-covered cakes, with no risk of bending during transport. Its textured silver finish with floral pattern reflects light and enhances any cake placed on it, especially sought after for weddings and prestigious events.

At Patissland, this silver drum holds a special place in our cake design support range. While a white drum offers a minimalist and contemporary look, the silver drum adds a chic and event-worthy dimension that immediately evokes wedding receptions, galas, or high-end ceremonies. Its embossed coating with a discreet floral pattern highlights the cake colors without ever overshadowing the creation itself. Available in several diameters to fit all cake sizes, from individual desserts to multi-tiered cakes.

Drum features and quality

12 mm thickness, absolute rigidity

The 12 mm thickness fundamentally distinguishes a "drum" from a simple thin base (4 mm or 6 mm). This thickness provides:

Absolute rigidity, no bending even under the weight of several kilos

Stability during transport, the cake remains perfectly flat even on bumpy roads

Multi-tier capacity, supports 2, 3, or 4 cake tiers without deforming

For a wedding cake or a dense tiered cake, the 12 mm thickness is the professional standard. A thinner thickness could bend under the weight and compromise the cake's visual and structural integrity.

Textured silver finish with floral pattern

The silver food-grade aluminum coating features a discreet floral or textured embossed pattern. This texture:

Reflects light elegantly without creating harsh glare

Enhances the colors and decorations of the cake placed on it

Resistant to grease and moisture from creams (the coating is a waterproof barrier)

Gives an impression of quality and prestige perfectly suited for ceremonies, weddings, and high-end events

Reinforced internal structure "Heavy L"

The reinforced internal structure is designed to support multiple tiers without deforming, ensuring your smoothing and decorations remain intact from production to tasting. Unlike entry-level supports where compressed cardboard can bend under 3-4 kg, our silver drum maintains absolute flatness even with heavy loads. This allows cake designers to confidently deliver complete tiered cakes without transport worries.

Material, high-density compressed cardboard + food-grade aluminum

Core: high-density compressed cardboard (several layers of cardboard glued under pressure for maximum rigidity)

Coating: food-grade aluminum covered with a shiny silver layer with textured pattern

Food contact: compliant with European food standards, no migration to the cake placed on it

This sandwich construction provides a support that is both rigid (thanks to high-density cardboard) and visually luxurious (thanks to the aluminum coating), combining the advantages of both materials.

Reusable with care

Thanks to its quality aluminum coating, this drum can be cleaned with a damp sponge after use for reuse. Conditions for optimal reuse:

Careful handling (avoid impacts on the edges)

No deep cuts on the silver surface (a knife cutting through the cake and biting into the drum damages the coating)

Gentle cleaning without full immersion in water (the inner cardboard does not tolerate prolonged moisture)

In practice, a well-maintained silver drum can be used 3 to 5 times before showing visible signs of wear.

Silver drum vs white drum, which to choose?

When to choose the silver drum rather than white?

The silver drum is essential in the following contexts:

Weddings and ceremonies, silver immediately evokes celebration and prestige, especially on white or pastel wedding cakes

Gala events, corporate parties, prestigious birthdays, high-end baptisms

Colorful cakes, the neutral silver base highlights all color palettes (pink, red, blue, gold)

"Glamorous" and "chic" themes, prestigious Christmas, New Year's, premium Valentine's Day

When to prefer the white drum?

The white drum remains preferable for:

Contemporary minimalist cake design, Scandinavian or Japanese style playing on clean lines

Daily shop display, rotation of varied cakes where the neutrality of white helps visual consistency

Very colorful or heavily decorated cakes, where a neutral white base avoids visual overload

Soft pastel themes, powder pink baby shower, children's birthday

The choice between silver and white is a matter of style and context, not quality; both drums are technically identical (12 mm thickness, high-density cardboard, reinforced structure).

Why not both in my professional collection?

Many professional cake designers keep both versions in stock to adapt according to the order. Wedding client? Silver drum. Daily shop client? White drum. Colorful children's birthday client? White drum. Corporate event client? Silver drum. This flexibility allows always offering the most suitable support for the client's visual universe without stock breaks and without aesthetic compromise.

Size guide and chef's advice

Pro tip, choosing the right drum diameter

Basic rule: choose a drum with a diameter 4 to 6 cm larger than your cake. Concrete example:

Cake Ø 20 cm, choose a drum Ø 24 to 26 cm

Cake Ø 25 cm, choose a drum Ø 29 to 31 cm

Cake Ø 30 cm, choose a drum Ø 34 to 36 cm

This 2 to 3 cm space all around serves to:

Base decoration (cream piping, pearls, sugar paste flowers, satin ribbons)

Handling during transport and manipulation

Visual balance: a cake touching the edges of the drum looks "squashed"

Available sizes in the range

We offer this silver drum in several diameters to suit all your projects, from individual cakes to the wedding centerpiece. Check the available size selection directly on the product page to choose the one that fits your needs. For multi-tier projects, it is common to order several diameters at once: a large drum for the base (e.g., 35 cm) and smaller (intermediate) diameters to elevate each tier if you use the "separator" technique.

Size and serving correspondence

Guideline to estimate the number of servings based on cake size (and therefore the drum to choose +4 to +6 cm):

Cake Ø 15 cm, about 6-8 servings, drum Ø 20 cm

Cake Ø 20 cm, about 10-12 servings, drum Ø 25 cm

Cake Ø 25 cm, about 16-20 servings, drum Ø 30 cm

Cake Ø 30 cm, about 25-30 servings, drum Ø 35 cm

For centerpieces, add the portions of the different tiers and choose a base drum that comfortably supports the widest tier.

Recommended professional uses

Wedding cakes and wedding centerpieces

Flagship use of the silver drum, the multi-tier wedding cakes. The silver finish perfectly matches traditional wedding cakes (white, ivory, nude, pastel) as well as more contemporary trends (nude cake, semi-naked cake, drip cake). For a classic 3-tier cake, a silver drum Ø 35 to 40 cm as a base provides a stable and aesthetically flawless support. The subtle floral pattern gently evokes the wedding theme without competing with the cake's decorations.

Ceremonial cakes and prestigious events

For ceremonial cakes (prestigious birthdays, corporate events, galas, jubilees), the silver drum adds the expected touch of solemnity. A corporate cake for a company anniversary, placed on a silver drum Ø 30 cm, immediately conveys a message of quality and respect for the event. The same applies to high-end baptisms where the family expects decorations worthy of the celebration.

Fondant-covered cakes

Fondant-covered cakes are particularly heavy (fondant adds several hundred grams extra to a standard cake). The 12 mm thickness of the drum is essential here; a thinner support would sag under the weight. Absolute rigidity also ensures that your hours of smoothing and decorating work are not compromised by support deformation during delivery. For a fondant cake, never skip using a 12 mm drum.

Fake wedding cakes and decorated dummies

For fake wedding cakes made on polystyrene cake dummies covered with fondant (shop displays, trade shows, portfolio photo shoots), the silver drum provides the complete visual base that transforms a simple technical demonstration into an impressive presentation piece. A dummy placed without a drum looks "bare," a dummy on a silver drum becomes a true exhibition piece.

Safe transport and delivery

One of the major advantages of the 12 mm drum is security during transport. A cake placed on a thick drum can be carried by holding the edges of the drum firmly, without ever touching the cake itself. To deliver wedding cakes or ceremonial cakes over sometimes long distances (up to several tens of kilometers for an event), this stability is essential. The drum absorbs road vibrations and protects the integrity of the decorations during transit.

Patissland complementary products

White 12 mm drum (alternative version)

If you are looking for the white version of the same drum (same 12 mm thickness, same rigidity, same build quality), Patissland also offers the white 12 mm drum. Choose it for cakes with a minimalist contemporary style, for daily shop displays, or as a complement to the silver drum in your professional stock to cover all customer requests.

4 mm rectangular silver boards

In addition to the drum, Patissland offers 4 mm silver boards in rectangular format. Different use from the drum, the thin boards are used to place a cake without adding visual height, perfect for individual desserts, yule logs, trays of petits fours. Do not confuse with the 12 mm drum which is made for weight and rigidity.

Support rods for multi-tiered cakes

To create a multi-tiered wedding cake placed on your silver drum, you need through-support rods to stabilize the whole. Patissland offers several options: PME 30 cm wooden rods pack of 12, Wilton hollow rods 32 cm, Décora sticks 16 and 30 cm, PME Easy Cut rods. The silver drum holds the base, the rods support the upper tiers.

Basic ribbons and decorations

To decorate the edge of your silver drum, place a satin ribbon matching the event theme (white, ivory, wedding color) glued with a drop of glucose or edible glue. This final touch transforms an already elegant drum into an element perfectly integrated into the cake decoration. Patissland stocks several widths and colors of ribbons for cake design.

Polystyrene cake dummies for displays

To create wedding cake dummies for display windows or presentations, Patissland offers polystyrene cake dummies in various diameters, stackable for tiered cakes. Placed on your silver drum, they allow you to create visually spectacular pieces that last indefinitely without risk of deterioration (ideal for wedding displays, portfolio exhibitions).

Fondants for covering

Cakes placed on a silver drum are very often covered with fondant (the "silver drum + smooth fondant" combo is the hallmark of classic cake design). Patissland offers a wide range of professional-quality fondants: Saracino, Azucren Elite, Massa Ticino. Choose according to your technique, Saracino Pasta Model for complex modeling, Azucren Elite for a smooth, shiny finish.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a 12 mm drum and a 4 mm board?

Two products for two completely different uses:

12 mm Drum (this product), rigid, designed to support heavy weight (wedding cakes, tiered cakes, multi-layer fondant cakes). Stable base for transport.

4 mm base, flexible, designed for individual desserts, yule logs, petit fours, light desserts. Just a visual support without structural role.

Don't confuse the two; an individual 200 g dessert doesn't need a 12 mm drum (overkill), a 3 kg wedding cake would collapse on a 4 mm base (fatal).

Can you place a cake directly on the drum?

Yes, absolutely. The silver food-grade aluminum coating is compliant with direct food contact. You can place your cake without an interlayer. For very creamy or very moist cakes, some professionals place a small cardboard round the exact size of the cake to facilitate later cutting (the cake is lifted with its interlayer round without stressing the drum). This tip is optional, not mandatory.

How to clean the drum for reuse?

1. Wait until the drum is completely empty (cake consumed or transferred)

2. Scrape off any residue with a flexible, non-sharp spatula

3. Use a soft, slightly damp cloth with a little mild soap

4. Wipe immediately with a second dry cloth

Never immerse the drum in water; the inner cardboard would absorb moisture and the drum would deform. Never use abrasive sponges that would scratch the silver coating. With these precautions, a silver drum can be used 3 to 5 times.

Does the drum withstand the heat of a cake straight from the oven?

No. The drum is designed to hold cooled or cold cakes, not hot cakes straight from the oven. The heat could damage the internal glue of the high-density cardboard and compromise rigidity. Always let your cakes cool completely on a rack before transferring them to the drum. However, the drum perfectly supports refrigeration (cake placed on it for several hours to set) and freezing (for desserts to be frozen).

Can you cut directly on the drum?

Yes, but with precautions. A knife with a smooth blade poses no problem; the rounded tip prevents cutting the coating. However, a very sharp knife that cuts entirely through the cake can scratch the silver coating. To preserve the drum for reuse, use a flat-blade knife like a "service knife" that slides without cutting. For wedding cakes, some caterers use the stands directly as table displays and do the cutting in the kitchen, which preserves the drum.

What is the maximum load the 12 mm drum can support?

The 12 mm drum comfortably supports up to 5-8 kg Depending on the diameter. For reference, a standard 3-tier wedding cake weighs about 4 to 6 kg. A 2-tier fondant cake weighs 2 to 3 kg. A covered dummy cake weighs 1 to 2 kg. In all these cases, the 12 mm drum offers a comfortable safety margin. For even heavier pieces (massive 5-tier wedding cake), consider using two stacked drums or reinforcing the internal structure with an additional wooden board under the visible drum.

Is the drum compatible with food safety standards?

Yes, the drum is compliant with European food safety standards for direct contact with food. The aluminum coating used is food grade certified and does not cause any substance migration to the cake placed on it. You can use this drum safely, including for sensitive events (pregnancy, children, immunocompromised people). For professionals subject to HACCP audits, technical data sheets for the drums are available on request to support your documentation.

How to store unused drums?

Store drums flat, stacked, in a dry, temperate place (ideally with relative humidity below 60%). Avoid damp cellars or poorly ventilated spaces, as humidity would degrade the high-density cardboard over time and the drum would lose its rigidity. Optimal storage is on a dedicated shelf outside the production area (to avoid splashes). Properly stored, drums remain usable for several years without any visible degradation.

Is there a visible pattern or is it uniform?

The drum features a textured finish with a subtle raised floral pattern, not a flat uniform surface. This pattern is subtle enough not to distract from the cake placed on it, but present enough to give an impression of quality and elegance. From a distance, the drum appears uniformly shiny silver. Up close, you can see the decorative relief that plays with the light. This dual effect is what makes the textured silver drum popular in event cake design.

Can the drum be cut to fit a specific diameter?

Technically yes, with a good cutter or a fine saw, but it is not recommended. Cutting leaves uncoated edges (exposed raw cardboard) that break the silver aesthetic. For a specific diameter, order the drum closest to your need directly from the available size range. If you really need to adjust, you can hide the cut edges with satin ribbon or a decorative strip glued around the perimeter.
