Lightly flour the cookie cutter before each cut, or dip it in starch when working with sugar paste.

Will the imprint remain visible after baking?
Yes, with firm, lightly leavened shortcrust dough that has been chilled before baking. Doughs containing a lot of leavening or soft butter will blur the design more.
