Rectangular Silver Cake Base — Premium Cake Board (4 mm Thickness)

Give your pastries a luxurious dimension with our rectangular silver cake base. This support, also called a Cake Board, is the essential accessory for refined presentation and secure transport. Its glossy metallic finish captures light and highlights the details of your glazes, turning every cake into an exceptional piece ready for display or the celebration table.

At Patissland, we selected this 4 mm base for its ideal balance between premium aesthetics and sufficient robustness. With its glossy silver finish and rectangular shape, it stands out as the perfect choice for Yule logs, rectangular entremets, themed birthday cakes, and all creations requiring a base that shines under event lighting.

The perfect balance between aesthetics and strength

Premium presentation — glossy silver finish

The metallic silver finish provides an immediate shine and a luxurious touch to all your creations. It captures event lighting and highlights the reflections of your glazes, ganaches, and decorations. Ideal for wedding cakes, Yule logs, large birthday entremets, or pastry displays where visual impact is crucial.

4 mm thickness — ultra-robust support

With a thickness of 4 mm, this board offers much greater rigidity than standard 2-3 mm bases. It prevents any bending during service or transport, even with generous cakes. It’s the right compromise for most event pastries: rigid enough to avoid bending, without reaching the professional thickness of 12 mm cake drums (reserved for very heavy tiered cakes).

Durable and reusable design

Made with high-density materials, this base is reusable with proper care. An economical and quality solution for professional pastry chefs who handle multiple events, or amateur cake designers who want to amortize their investment over several creations. Average lifespan: 5 to 10 uses depending on precautions.

Rectangular shape — maximum versatility

The rectangular shape is perfectly suited for pastry frames, yule logs, large family cakes, American sheet cakes, and anything beyond the classic round shape. A shape often underrepresented in catalogs despite being essential for modern entremets and buffet presentations.

Ideal uses

Christmas and holiday yule logs

The ultimate use. The rectangular shape + shiny silver finish enhance the presentation of traditional or contemporary yule logs. The metallic shine recalls the magic of holiday decorations and highlights ganaches, mirror glazes, and chocolate decorations. Essential for any pastry shop selling yule logs in December.

Rectangular entremets and pastry frames

Perfect for entremets set in pastry frames (rectangular strawberry cakes, operas, modern millefeuilles). The silver base provides an elegant contrast with the dessert’s colorful layers when sliced. Ideal for gourmet restaurants and contemporary pastry shops.

Sheet cakes and number cakes

American sheet cakes and number cakes require a sturdy rectangular base. The 4 mm base supports their weight well, and the silver finish creates a setting worthy of a major event (birthday, wedding, professional celebration).

Large family cakes

For birthday cakes serving 15-30 people or communion cakes, the rectangular shape is often more practical than round (better equal slicing, better icing distribution). The silver base transforms a "family" cake into an elegant centerpiece.

Small pastry trays and buffet

Arrange your macarons, cupcakes, verrines, bites, éclairs here: the base serves as a unified presentation tray that brings visual coherence to a variety of small pastries. Reusable from one event to another for caterers.

Pastry shop window display

In a shop window, the silver finish reflects LED lighting and highlights the displayed cakes. A "jewelry box" effect that encourages impulse buying. Minimal investment for immediate commercial impact.

What’s the difference with a 12 mm cake drum?

4 mm Base vs 12 mm Cake Drum — the right choice

Two complementary products, not competitors:

4 mm Base (this sheet) — rigid base for simple cakes and aesthetic presentation. Perfect for Yule logs, entremets, simple layer cakes, family cakes. The silver finish is a premium visual asset.

12 mm Cake Drum — ultra-thick base for heavy tiered cakes and layered wedding cakes. Essential when supporting several kilos or serving as a structural base.

Simple rule: single-level simple cake → 4 mm base. Multi-tier cake or tiered cake → 12 mm cake drum. Both are available at Patissland to cover all your needs.

4 mm base vs thin 2-3 mm base

The 4 mm base is designed to support denser and heavier cakes without bending. A thin 2-3 mm base is ideal as a tier separator within a tiered cake (between two levels, visually hidden), or as a simple stand for a light cake (mousse, plain sponge). The 4 mm serves as a stable main base, ensuring that decoration (especially buttercream borders) does not crack during handling.

When to choose silver vs white?

Silver (this sheet): festive events, Yule logs, shiny weddings, chocolate pieces, luxury presentations. Silver adds an immediate "event" touch.

White: classic pastries, pastel wedding cakes, minimalist presentations, desserts where the cake is the star. White is neutral and visually breathable.

At Patissland, both finishes are available: build your stock according to your business style and typical events.

Patissland care and presentation tips

Cleaning after use

After use, wipe the surface with a slightly damp sponge and a little mild soap. Avoid full immersion to preserve the integrity of the compressed cardboard under the silver coating. Water penetrating the inner cardboard causes swelling and irreversible deformation. Dry immediately with a clean cloth.

Use before transport

For a professional finish: center your cake precisely on the base, then secure it with a dab of royal icing or melted chocolate to prevent any slipping during transport. This invisible food "glue spot" ensures the cake stays perfectly in place even during sudden braking or sharp turns. Essential for long-distance deliveries.

Protection with food barrier

To extend the life of your base (for reuse) and ensure optimal hygiene, place a sheet of parchment paper cut to size between the cake and the base. This barrier protects the silver coating from grease and juices and makes cleaning much easier after use. The parchment paper is invisible once the cake is placed.

Storage and preservation

Store your trays flat in a dry place to avoid any deformation. Place a sheet of parchment paper between each base to prevent them from sticking together (especially in humid conditions). Avoid direct sunlight exposure, which can dull the silver finish over time.

Decorative customization

Since silver is an elegant color, there’s no need to overdo it — but you can dress the edge with a ribbon (white satin, gold, or themed color) attached with food-safe double-sided tape. You can also place edible fresh flowers, mint leaves, or a dusting of powdered sugar that stands out beautifully against the silver background.

All about the Silver Cake Board

What is the difference between a 4 mm base and a thin support?

The 4 mm base is designed to support denser and heavier cakes without bending, while a thin base (2-3 mm) is ideal as a tier separator in a cake tower. The 4 mm Cake Board serves as a stable main base, ensuring your decoration (especially buttercream borders) does not crack during handling. It’s the right choice for 90% of event cakes.

Is the silver finish suitable for food contact?

Absolutely. The silver coating is specifically designed for direct food contact. It is resistant to grease and moisture, preventing the support from softening or staining, even after several hours in the fridge. No substance migration to food. Complies with current European CE standards.

How to choose the right size board for my cake?

For an elegant presentation and easy handling, we recommend choosing a board at least 2 to 5 cm larger than your cake dimensions. This leaves space to add a decorative border or simply to hold the board without touching the icing. Example: rectangular cake 25x15 cm → base 30x20 cm. For logs: log length + 5-8 cm in length to allow presentation margin.

Can the base be used in the refrigerator?

Yes, no problem. The high-density cardboard and silver coating perfectly withstand positive cold and temperature changes related to fridge removal. Possible cold duration: several hours or even overnight. Just avoid the freezer, which can cause condensation when returning to room temperature.

Can the base be used as a foundation for a two-tier cake?

For a 2-tier cake of moderate weight (less than 3-4 kg total), yes. For heavier or 3-tier and above cakes, we recommend our 12 mm cake drums which offer superior rigidity. The 4 mm base remains perfect for simple cakes and entremets, where cake drums are reserved for large wedding cakes.

How many times can the base be reused?

On average 5 to 10 uses with proper care and the use of a protective barrier (parchment paper). The bases mainly degrade due to: persistent icing marks, bending during difficult transport, scratches when unmolding. For intensive professional use (several events per week), plan for a regularly replenished stock.

Does the silver finish dull over time?

The metallic silver coating is stable and does not oxidize like real metal. However, it may slightly dull after several reuses, especially with greasy icing residues not properly cleaned. To preserve the shine: careful cleaning after each use and storage away from direct light. The finish remains attractive over the typical 5-10 uses.

Can the cake be cut directly on the base?

Not recommended. The knife would scratch the silver coating and damage the base for possible reuse. Better: use a cake server to take portions, or transfer the cake to a standard serving tray before cutting. For events where cutting is done in front of guests (weddings), provide an elegant serving dish as well.

How to transport the filled base by car?

Place the filled base in a suitable cake box (such as Azucren) that will protect the cake during transport. In the car: on a flat floor or a rear seat (never the passenger seat with an airbag), on a non-slip mat, transport strictly flat. For a perfect result on arrival, drive gently: slow turns, gradual braking, no sudden accelerations.

Is the base recyclable?

Partially. The base cardboard is recyclable through paper-cardboard channels, but the metallic silver coating can complicate sorting. Prioritize reuse (5-10 times with care) as the first ecological approach. At the end of life, dispose of in household waste if your local sorting center does not process metallic cardboard. Some specialized collection points accept this type of packaging.

Which color to choose between silver, gold, and white?

Silver: festive events, bright weddings, Yule logs, modern and radiant style.

Gold: chic and romantic events, special birthdays, vintage luxury style.

White: classic pastries, pastel wedding cakes, minimalist style where the cake is the star.

The silver rectangular shape is especially popular for Christmas, winter weddings, and all events where you want an immediate "sparkling" effect.
