Lace mat for fondant
Silicone mat with a lace pattern for texturing fondant and creating sharply defined raised borders or ribbons.
How a lace mat works
A silicone lace mat reproduces a raised pattern (flowers, arabesques, guipure lace) when a thin layer of fondant or edible lace paste is spread over it. Once dry, the pattern comes off the mat and can be placed on the cake or wrapped around a tier.
Choosing a pattern based on how you’ll use it
Regular geometric patterns are suitable for continuous borders on a layer cake; more organic floral patterns work well for individual appliqués or tiered cakes. The mat can be cleaned with warm water and reused for multiple projects.
Frequently asked questions
Classic fondant or specialty edible lace paste?
Edible lace paste, which is more elastic once dry, reproduces fine patterns more accurately and withstands handling without breaking; classic fondant is suitable for larger reliefs.
How long should the lace dry before unmolding?
A few minutes at room temperature is usually enough for a fine pattern; drying for too long makes unmolding more delicate.
Can the mat be reused?
Yes, a silicone mat can be cleaned with warm water without harsh detergent and retains its pattern over many uses.
